Graffiti is a touchy subject. Is it good? Is it bad? Is it art? Is it even legal? Unfortunately, the best answer is it depends and it's complicated. Your answer will change based on what you believe to be the definition of graffiti. Here is my opinion: Graffiti is a style of art that must include stylized words. It commonly is done using spray paint in public spaces.
FACT: Graffiti is often times created in spaces where permission has not been granted, and on property that does not belong to the artist. Regardless of your intentions(good or bad) this is a form of VANDALISM!!!!! This is the reason for the bad reputation surrounding graffiti.
Answer: That's easy. If you like the style of graffiti continue to do it like any other art form. Create your art on your property or on someone else's stuff if they want you too. You wouldn't have seen Vincent Van Gough painting Starry Night on the side of a bridge or Leonardo da Vinci painting the Mona Lisa on the Palazzo Vecchio! (Look it up, that's close to where the Mona Lisa was painted)
Here's a Lancaster graffiti artist I know who is doing it the right way:

Here's your project: Create your name in the style of graffiti so when can put in on the cover of your elements of art book. Requirements:
1. Letters should be thick shapes (block letters, bubble letters, etc.)
2. Overlap your letters- graffiti artists commonly do this and I also want to see if you can figure it out.
3. Add something extra: arrows, feet, bits, and seraphs.
4. Blending Colors- graffiti artists are masters of blending colors.
